Obama, Pick Up The Phone, Talk To Hillary

Obama is right. Hillary is wrong. But when you look carefully, their positions are not that different after all. Hillary said early this year what Obama said during the debate. Obama said a few days before the debate what Hillary said during the debate. They both believe in engaging Third World dictators like Bill Clinton engaged Kim Jong Il. But they don't want to do it in a way that might hurt US interests.

This is much ado about nothing.

And, besides, Hillary is no Third World dictator. If Kim Jong Il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Bashar al-Ashad are worth talking to, Hillary is worth talking to. And so Obama should pick up the phone and talk. They should perhaps meet.

There are genuine differences between the two. And the voters should get to know what they are. That is why we have elections. But I think it is inevitable that both end up on the same ticket. Obama alone, or Hillary alone will accentuate the race or gender factor and the Republicans m…

And the reason is this: That the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them, which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration, is ridiculous. (Applause.) And the reason is because they understood that we may not trust them, they may pose an extraordinary danger to this country, but we have the obligation to find areas where we can potentially move forward.And I think that it is a disgrace that we have not spoken to them.We've been talking about Iraq. One of the first things that I would do in terms of moving a diplomatic effort in the region forward is to send a signal that we need to talk to Iran and Syria, because they're going to have responsibilities if Iraq collapses.
